The Association
APL : The Parents Association of the Lycée
Created in 1927, the APL is the only parents association for the four Lycée sites of South Kensington, Marie d'Orliac, André Malraux and Wix. It represents the parents’ interests to the teachers, the school’s administration and other official bodies. It is open to all parents, regardless of nationality, religion, or political persuasion.
A Dynamic Association
The parents’ association of the Lycée gathers all the parents who wish to be involved in the life of the school. At the beginning of each academic year, all parents are invited to become members of the APL.
- The parents of each class are represented by two parent delegates, members of APL, who volunteer in September. These delegates liaise between the parents and the teachers on all questions of general interest. In the secondary school they are required to sit, in an objective capacity, at the three “conseils de classe”.
- The APL Committee, elected by the association’s members, are the spokespersons, maintaining a continuous dialogue with the teachers and administration. It represents the parents at the” Conseil d’Etablissement” or school council, as well as on various committees. The Committee comprises a sub-committee, responsible for the administration and running of the association, and coordinators for each school level, who represent the delegates.
- The APL organises, for all parents, an information office, two notice boards (listings and private tuition), a web site, visits of the Primary together with social occasions which give parents the opportunity to meet members of the Lycée’s management team.
- The APL supports teacher and student led projects by providing financial aid for a number of these initiatives: cultural and educational outings, art and maths competitions, the Prom and Yearbook for the final year students.
The APL provides exclusive advantages for its members : a free subscription to the Echo, an accident and personal liability insurance and a shared transport list for its members. By becoming a member of the APL we can help you to contact other families living in your area who are willing to share a school run by bus, tube, car or even by foot. The details you provide to us are sorted by borough and made available to you in the ‘‘Shared Transport’’ in the member area of our website.
L’Echo, is a non profit magazine, publishing some 2,000 copies, independent from APL but organized by a group of volunteer Lycée parents. It is sent to the APL members five times a year (non members may also take out a subscription). Financed mostly through advertising, its objective is to inform the parents about the life of the French community in London (education, culture and activities).
The Means to Succeed
The activities of the APL are financed by annual subscriptions and donations from parents who wish to be associated with improvements to the school environment and pupil well being. During registration at the begining of the year parents are invited to subscribe and make donations to :
- Finance the administration and publications of the APL including the welcome brochure, the registration forms, the mailings and l’Echo magazine.
- Help finance projects proposed by teachers and pupils : cultural and educational outings; the Défi Lecture, the Prom, the Fashion Show, the Yearbook ...
- Finance social and cultural events organised by the APL : the School Fairs, the Careers Forum, informal meetings between the parents and the Lycée’s management team...
